Spying the Job Market

On occasion, we like to look at the job boards to get an idea where growth is coming from in the industry. This is not an exhaustive examination by any manner, but quick peek.

On Monster, Affymetrix is seeking an applications specialist and a senior scientist II. According to the ad, the applications specialist will help customers by phone or e-mail and assist in lab work and perform some training. Bachelor's degree required. The senior scientist should have eight years of experience, a bachelor's degree, and will link analysis and biology functions.

Additionally, the company is looking for a manufacturing engineer to work in the Boston area, and a "clinical market attack planner."

Agilent Technologies is seeking a research associate and a scientist for its new outpost in Cambridge, Mass. The job will require a bachelor's degree and will entail working with microarray technology and data. The scientist will work in collaboration within the company and with customers to determine new microarray applications. Bachelor's or master's degree required.

Additionally, the company is hiring an assistant to help in Cambridge, "screening managers' internal and external correspondences (i.e. emails, voice mails, etc.) and actively reviewing, routing and responding to inquiries as appropriate with ability to handle sensitive situations while maintaining professional confidentiality."

Proctor & Gamble and Coca-Cola are underwriting African-American Lives, a four-part PBS documentary scheduled to air in February. The program will use DNA analysis as part of its investigation into the origins of African Americans, including tools provided by a collaboration between microarray leader Affymetrix, and DNA Print Genomics.
